Our History
Our Beginnings
The Humble Start of a Great Dream
In the early 20th century, the city of Makkah was experiencing special moments as football was played for the first time within its sacred corridors. Pilgrims from around the world engaged in this sport during their stay, making it a part of Makkah’s daily life and bearing witness to the birth of a game that would leave an everlasting mark.
Al Mukhtalat
The First Spark
In 1916, the first official club in Makkah was established under the name Al Mukhtalat. The name reflected a spirit of diversity, as the club included both Saudi and non-Saudi players. This diversity wasn’t just a choice but a reflection of Makkah itself—a meeting point of cultures and nationalities.
Al Hizb
A Step Toward National Identity
In 1945, the club’s name changed from Al Mukhtalat to Al Hizb (The Party). This wasn’t merely a change of name; it marked the beginning of a national identity, carrying the responsibility of representing the Kingdom in the sports arena. Al Hizb became the sole national team, a dream maker, and an inspiration for the youth.
Al Wehda
A Name Reflecting a National Vision
In the same year, 1945, the club’s name evolved into Al Wehda (Unity), symbolizing the unification of Saudi Arabia, which brought together its regions into a single entity. The official registration of the club with the General Administration of Sports was a culmination of this national spirit, making Al Wehda a symbol of cohesion and harmony.
Our Glorious History
Moments Etched in Memory
In 1957 (1377 AH), Sheikh Kamil Azhar—may he rest in peace—became the first president of a Saudi club to receive the club’s first trophy. This wasn’t just a moment of pride for Al Wehda, but for Saudi sports as a whole.
“Sheikh’s Stars” made history by winning the King’s Cup in the same year, a timeless moment cherished by every fan of Al Wehda.
A commemorative photo shows Al Wehda‘s team after their final match against Al Ittihad at the Saban Stadium—a testament to their strength and determination.
The club received the King’s Cup from King Saud—may he rest in peace—and Sheikh Hassan Nassif, Deputy Minister of Interior, affirming Al Wehda‘s position as a national sports symbol.
National Achievements
Ambassadors of Saudi Sports
Al Wehda players represented the Saudi national team during its first training camp in 1960 (1380 AH), raising the Kingdom’s flag high.
The first team reached the final of the King’s Cup in the same year, adding a new chapter to the book of achievements.
An Unforgettable Legacy
From Al Mukhtalat to Al Wehda, this journey is filled with achievements and stories that reflect the spirit of Makkah and the history of the Kingdom. Al Wehda is more than just a football team; it reflects history, heritage, and an enduring dream of giving and excellence.
